There was a time (not very long ago) when I didn’t have a clue about care icons and certainly didn’t refer to them for the care of my garments. I’ve always relied upon common sense, developed through some bitter disappointments (think perfect iron singes on clothes and misadventures with bleach).
Caring for equestrian clothing (breeches, jodphurs, riding pants or whatever you may call them), is really not a lot different to caring for any other garment. Luckily they all come with instructions, if we know where to find them and how to read them.
Here's a brief summary:
Sometimes you’ll see the same icon, but it will have dots to indicate warmth. One dot = 30⁰, 2 dots = 40⁰, etc.
Water at 30⁰ is not very hot, in fact it’s less than lukewarm.
The dot system is as described above and pretty easy to understand.
If you’ve ever scorched a garment you’ll understand why you really should heed this advice, but the feel of the fabric is a good indicator of what temperature you’d need. In this case, make it as low as you can!
Righto! And why go to that expense if it isn’t recommended?
The solvents and chemicals used in dry cleaning can be toxic and over time can be damaging to some fabrics. The fabric in your breeches is one of them, so please don’t.
This means it can be put in the clothes dryer, not that it should be!
And again, with the cost of electricity why would you?
This one is a lot like the dry cleaning. The bleach will break down the fabric in your riding pants – don’t do it – please!
That’s a pretty long list of things not to do. But it basically comes down to heat and chemicals, you want to avoid both.
So, here’s what I do to care for my riding pants, remembering that I’m a lazy (and frugal) housewife.
Firstly, I always wash in cold water. I read somewhere that hot water will set a stain, so I tell myself that’s the reason, truth is I’m not paying for hot water unless I need to.
I don’t own a clothes dryer and instead I line dry my riding pants, in the shade! In fact, I line dry everything in the shade.
If I’m riding at home on my own arena or on a trail ride, I don’t bother to iron. My horses don’t seem to mind, and it doesn’t seem to take long for the creases to fall out anyway. Just like denim jeans really.
However, if I’m going out somewhere I do take a little more care.
Instead I use a steamer. Not a fancy one either, I think I got mine from Kmart and from memory it was about $35(ish). And I only ever steam from about mid-thigh down.
Soooo, that’s it. I like to keep thing quick, simple and easy.
Well, I tend to choose the darker colours anyway so it’s not really an issue for me. I do have some trail riding pants in wheat and in all honesty, other than normal day to day marks they haven’t stained. But if they had I would use a warm water soak.
25 year on from babies, and I still have nappy soaker in my laundry.
Follow these instructions and your Proud Horse Riding Pants should last a very, very long time.

Happy with my purchase. Can't wait to ride in them.
Amazing fit - so comfortable and will be much cooler to ride in this summer compared to my jeans.
Pants are about 8 inches too long!!!
Rode in them this weekend at a clinic. I really liked them - no binding or uncomfortable areas. They fit big probably because of the stretch - I would suggest you size down one size because after they were worn for awhile they were quite loose.
These pants are high quality, extremely stretchy, deliciously comfortable leggings that are an English/Western fusion. They are a top notch outfit for a Western Dressage competition…
These tights are super comfy and look great. They will be nice for the warmer weather here in California.
Hi. I don't have my pants yet. I ordered the wrong size. I'm here to say I had such an easy time fixing that. My pants are already returned, and the correct size is on the way. Oh, and the pants I sent back were really good quality. I can see that they would last many years. Still a bit of a wait for my riding pants but I can't wait to take my first ride in them. Fitting saddles should be this easy.
Tried out my new bootcut tights today and they are incredible . Great fabric (light whilst still feeling substantial) , comfortable and look flattering as well. Will be getting another pair for sure !
They would have to be the most comfortable pair of pants I have ever worn. Not only can you wear them for your equine needs but you could also wear them for your non equine needs. They are a big plus factor for my wardrobe.
I consulted with Colleen before purchasing and she helped me find the perfect fit (just needed a hem). They are very comfortable while riding, durable enough to wear around my dairy farm, and flattering enough to wear out on the town. I already want a second pair!
I love the quality of these pants. They are so nicely made. I am wearing them around the house this week to see how much they stretch out. Thanks for these!
Ive been riding for more than 50 years now and these pants are the best pants I have ever come across. The material is fabulous. Construction is solid and feminizing. They fit true to size. Im very very pleased!
My order is currently in Miami awaiting transfer. Last info available Friday, April 12.
My RideProud jeans are just awesome. I finally have a pair of comfortable, flattering pants that don't ride up. I ride in cowboy boots which are too tall to make use of the under foot stirrup--but it didn't matter, the pants did not ride up. Yay!
I am delighted with my Equitation riding pants. They fit perfectly, are exceptionally well detailed and tailored and I was really pleased that the suede goes right to the hem..The high waist is wonderful( nearly all breeches / jodhpurs seem to be cut so low these days…)Colleen’s advice and help were great…I know I will be buying another pair in future!

Hi Colleen
I’m saving my pants for ASH competition.
They are a great fit.
Can I spray the inside leg with stain remover??.
Thanks for the washing instructions.
